Living in New Mexico, I've run across a fair amount of Native American jewelry crafted in brass. But this is the first strand of brass bench beads I've seen in person. Also called Navajo, or Desert Pearls, this strand is (in my opinion) fabulous! My photos don't portray the color correctly. The beads aren't coppery, nor are they a bright polished brass, but more of a rich golden color that seems to glow. I'll try to get better pics posted. Every bead features a stamped design & the beads graduate from 10mm to 14mm in diameter. The necklace has an overall length of 24 1/2" from end-to-end & weighs in at a substantial 79.6 grams. Unsigned & in beautiful vintage condition.
When it comes to Native American jewelry, we automatically think "Silver". But, brass has been a well used medium since the late 1890s. For example, renowned Navajo artist and silversmith, Orville Tsinnie (1943-2017), created beautiful jewelry in both silver and brass; both of which are highly collectable today.
