*Battle Beyond the Stars* (1980) is a low-budget space opera produced by Roger Corman, essentially a sci-fi retelling of *The Magnificent Seven*, where a peaceful planet hires a group of mercenaries to defend it from a tyrannical warlord. Young farm boy Shad sets out to recruit a ragtag team of alien warriors, each with unique ships and abilities, to battle the evil Sador and his planet-destroying weapon. Directed by Jimmy T. Murakami with a screenplay by John Sayles, the film stars Richard Thomas, John Saxon, Robert Vaughn, and Sybil Danning, and is praised for its inventive design (with early work by James Cameron) and charming, scrappy spirit.
