Elder and Lamb Vintage Clay Sculpture - Jewish Ethiopion

Elder and Lamb, 7 inches tall. Artist signed Tannat in Hebrew. A stunning sculpture from clay by the Beta Yisrael, the Jewish Ethiopian community. This work of art captures a special moment of their history and the greater story of the Jewish People. Produced by the Hatzrot-Yassaf studio in Naharia, the project was sponsored by the Joint, the Jewish Agency, Bnei-Brith Naharia, and the Ministry of Absorbtion. From the fist waves of Ethiopian immigrants to Israel starting in the 1980s, there was an effort to integrate them meaningfully into society and the economy. This traditional craft initiative is an early attempt to utilize their talents for meaningful employment as they settled into their new homes. Today, Ethiopians have largely integrated into both religious and secular Israeli society, studying alongside their fellow Jews in prestigious religious schools and universities.
